Opera-Lytes has extensive experience with the "Savoy Operas" of Gilbert and Sullivan; some of our cast members have performed in more than thirty such productions. In addition, Gayle Nason-Churchill and Mel Churchill have attended the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival in Buxton, England for the past seven years and obtained valuable advice from the participants. For example, this resulted in our being permitted to incorporate a Long-Sword Dance, devised by Ivor Allsop, the world's leading authority on Long Sword Dancing, into our Fall 1999 production of "Ruddigore". And it resulted in our decision to perform, in November 2002, an updated version of "Utopia Unlimited", a rarely produced Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, which we moved from its customary South-Sea Island to the planet Utopia and provided costumes such as those worn in "Star Trek", "Star Wars", and "Men in Black"! The Opera-Lytes current plans include for us to offer one Gilbert and Sullivan operetta each year (usually in the Fall). Our spring production will usually be an older Broadway Show (vintage 1920-1960) or a light opera. We also plan two concerts a year, a Christmas program, and a Valentine's Program, offering a "potpourri" of musical highlights from both classical and contemporary musical theatre. |
